Let's Sit together

Unity is Strength, Division is Weakness

-Swahili Proverb

We live in an age where even neighbors don’t get to know one another, making it easy for preconceived notions to thrive, especially against marginalized communities. As two Muslim-American women, we wanted to do something about that, recognizing that we had to proactively counter misconceptions and misinformation about Muslims. We found the best way to do that is by getting to know our community members and neighbors through shared meals. We decided to call our project Eat With Muslims and we make sure that compassion and understanding have a seat at the dinner table. We want guests to ask questions, get to know one another, and most of all, be open. The first EWM dinner was held in January 2017 and we have been going strong ever since! The response has been powerful and exciting. It is also amazing to see that people recognize our work in building bridges between people of different cultures and faiths. Recently, we received U.S. Congressman Adam Smith’s 2018 Champion of Justice Award!

Whether it’s a dinner featuring delicious food and wonderful conversations; web and video content; volunteering; or programs around the arts, EWM works to give Muslim-Americans the chance to reach out and have their stories heard. We believe that eating together and sharing an experience is what will strengthen and enrich our country and values so let’s sit together.

We can be a greater and proactive force for compassion and understanding.

Muslims are one of the most hospitable, culturally diverse, and unique groups of people in the world, yet they face many challenges because people are afraid or stereotype them. Here in America, we rarely get a glimpse of what Muslims truly care about and what their stories look like. We are seen as different and mysterious. Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie stated “The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”

EWM wants to work to change the “only story” that is told about Muslims and showcase our beautiful diversity. This will be done through dinners, plays, photographs and videos.  We are hoping to attract a diverse audience to our project but most of all, Eat With Muslims will give Muslim Americans the chance to tell their own stories and reach out to their fellow Americans. We hope this can turn into a movement that allows people to come together, think critically, and have courageous conversations.
